Re: New Mortas Added To Davorin's Website

A stunning beauty. Is morta -- a kind of oak, right? Is there a domestic
north american equivalent?

Materials for tenon repair

I need to repair a tenon and was planning to use
delrin since that seems to be the standard. But
I am wondering if I could use acrylic/lucite. The
stem is acrylic and I'm planning to make a tenon
with 1.5 or 2mm walls to accomodate a filter.

Thanks!

Re: Minimum mortise wall thickness

If the stem is banded tightly, you can get away with a much thinner mortise wall than you could with no banding. I would say you'd be pushing your luck below 3/32" but that's just because 1/16 sounds too thin and 1/8 sounds perfectly thick. :D All the 9mm pipes I've ever seen had about 1.5mm t...

Minimum mortise wall thickness

I have a pipe with a broken stem and I am considering the possibility of remaking it for a 6mm or 9mm filter. What is the minimum thickness the shank's mortise wall should have. (If it is relevant, the shank has a silver band.). Also, assuming a Delrin tenon, what is the minimum thickness it should ...

Re: Tips for making oval shank

Ah, thanks... but I see now what Todd meant ... you can turn the larger
diameter and then make a small cut for the smaller diameter. Why
wouldn't it be sufficient just to draw the smaller diameter so that you
don't have to worry about making the end flush? I'm probably
missing something.

Thank you! Am I right in assuming that the tiny tenon is
basically the shape of the oval.

Thanks! Without thinking much I made one with a 5/8 shank for a sterling silver band I had. I was also using walnut since I think that looks good with a silver band. In any case, after I finished I noticed that Liverpools usually have narrower shanks for that size. I stuck a picture of it in the ava...

Shank diameter for a Liverpool

Assuming a 2.5" long shank on a liverpool (total length
of shank and bowl 4") what should the diameter of the
shank be?
Thanks

The tyler video was helpful. Just getting it started with a nice circle would make the rest easier. Also, he turns first and then drills the chamber. That way the briar is easily secured with the tailstock. By the way, on the 6" crapsman chuck I have if I use the diy jaws with the other pair th...

In any case, I found a useful set of directions for making a pair of hardwood extended jaws that you can use in a 4-jaw chuck: http://www.davidreedsmith.com/Articles/TwoJawChuck/TwoJawChuck.htm CLearly the cost effective solution. Eh, what now? Yep. That was my exact question. I didn't know that you could remove jaws from the C-clamp jaws. Never used them. Great video -- tolle Musik...

The question I had was how do you center a bent shank on
these (with all jaws on the chuck, but I see on the video that
you can remove individual C jaws to allow you to clamp the
briar so that you can center the bent shank per the drawing
by Frank.

Thanks again!!

but with independant jaws it would be a right bugger keeping everything in place while trying to centre in 3 planes. You also run the risk of the whole kit flying off when you start the lathe. Risky, to say the least. Earlier I had taken off two jaws and was meditating on the briar wedged between t...

Extended jaws... the missing piece for me. I wonder if I can get some for my chuck. If you can afford them: http://www.briarpipetooling.com/tooling/ Interesting. I guess if you had a welder you could machine and weld them yourself. Would be extravagant for the occasional pipe I make, but I wonder i...

I just posted a cigar blend recipe in the blends section. I didn't see this section. My view is that you would not use the wrapper, and only some of the binder. The filler on a good cigar has decent ligero content and that's what you want. If you are only after the burn qualities of cigar leaf, then...

I see how to do this when the shank is straight, but
how do you turn a, say, 1/4 bent shank on an
author? the shank has to be centered on the
lathe, but I can't figure out how you'd attach
the briar to the jaw chuck so the shank is
centered facing the tail stock.

When using a lathe, I am assuming that you fasten the
shank end into the headstock to turn it, which means that
you need to have enough stock on the shank end to
be held in a chuck or whatever you are using. You
can;t chuck the stummel end because that would be
too difficult to center. Or?
