Re: Was lucky enough to get a box of Semois Bouchons

There was a good bit of interest in these on the reddit cigar forum http://www.reddit.com/r/cigars . I'm sure you could get your hubby some really nice cigars in trade for these if you were up for such a thing. The guys on the pipe tobacco forum http://www.reddit.com/r/PipeTobacco were even more int...

Was lucky enough to get a box of Semois Bouchons

I smoked one last night and it was fantastic. The draw was smooth and cool like a calabash and that really allowed the flavors to stand out more than loose leaf in a bowl. It was strong, and made me dizzy at about bowl level, which generally doesn't happen to me. I was likely smoking too fast since ...

Some two year old Cumberland in a shop pipe Poker, some homebrew pale ale, and Led Zeppelin III. I haven't listened to this in a loooong time.

Re: Need advice on stem ornamentation on a metal lathe

Thanks Jeremiah. I think I'm going to spend some more time on the grinder and learn to grind some tools this weekend. I need to get more practice sharpening too.

Need advice on stem ornamentation on a metal lathe

Can anyone offer some advice on how best to make ornamentation on a stem with a metal lathe? Maybe which tool, how fast to spin, and how to make smooth curves? I'm destroying a bunch of stock trying to make any kind of a smooth curved angle. Is there a video of fancy stem technique anywhere? I haven...

Thank you for posting this Walt! I really learn a ton by watching how you pros work. Sometimes I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel way too much.

Some Gaslight in a Missouri Meerschaum, accompanied by a little Jefferson Ocean. They pair quite well.

Re: Big chuck on mini lathe

The worst part is that after I sold a Pappy 20 and 23, and bought a lower end wood lathe and a Taig, there are suddenly some nice old metal lathes listed on craigslist.

Re: Big chuck on mini lathe

As you can tell from some of my posts I've had bad TAD Tool Acquisition Disorder. I sacrificed a chunk of my bourbon collection to tool up. I think I must surely have reached the end...right?

Re: Set Up

As a beginner with very similar goals I went with a 1/2hp Enclosed Grizzly motor, the Beall setup, and an arbor from Kurt that I can use to mount normal sanding disks (the Beall won't do that). It's working fantastic in my limited experience. I have a duct in the front I can attach to my Shop-vac, a...

Re: Big chuck on mini lathe

Ah so. I went back and read your first query. I had mini metal lathe in my head. I'll stand by my recommendation to not put that chuck or anything similar to it on that small of a lathe. You might get away with it on a midi size but you would definitely want the Morse taper mount to reduce the exte...

Rikon 70-100, this critter here: http://www.rikontools.com/productpage_70-100.htm It's a fairly popular "starter" lathe.

Re: Big chuck on mini lathe

I don't know how "mini" your lathe is but I would not recommend trying to use it on a small lathe especially if you are holding it in a three jaw. Holding it that way increases the overhang to a point where you won't have much in the way of tailstock travel. My lathe is a 12" x 16&qu...

Re: Big chuck on mini lathe

Thank you Bill, those are great points. Has anyone seen the monster chuck that Tony Warner posted on instagram? Here's one of his posts showing it: http://instagram.com/p/nv2kjVCB-O/ Any opinions on that beast? It weighs 12lbs and is a little scary, but I may have a unique opportunity to get one. It...
