Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker

I have tried the method outlined by Joe, and agree that it works well. I'm using Fiebings black for the first/contrast step. However, I've tried aniline dye (both; with water and with alcohol) and I am not getting fantastic results with them. Breakdown: Sand to 220 - apply black, wait an hour or two...

Re: Looking for activated charcoal

I have a particular method for smoke cooking on my gas grill. Quick breakdown... I soak the chosen wood chips in water for an hour, make an aluminum "sleeping bad" and place the chips inside, lay this on a grate directly above the burner units. With the flame turned way down (almost to the...

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker

Thank you Andrew and sandahlpipe for your response. So, is it the rubbing that "re-activates" (or causes muddying of) the former applications? Ok, what if we could apply stain or shellac without rubbing? I'm leaning towards airbrush application. Would this type of application significantly...

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker

Question: I'm relatively new to this forum, and equally new to staining pipes. I've noticed when experimenting with contrast staining that if alcohol based stain is used for both layers, I get a muddy color on my application/wiping cloth. So I've been discussing this with a luthier friend and he sug...

That is a really nice looking artisan pipe. Was the mid-bowl ring freehand cut or off center turned? Nice stem work also.

Re: Meerschaum Billiard and Case

Sweet. 8) What's the case structural material? Also, did you cut down a bigger pipe or something? I thought raw meer wasn't available outside Turkey. Somewhere along the line, I got the impression that meer cases were made from paper mache... I tried that, it didn't turn out so well. In desperation...

A concept pipe...

Hi everyone. This is a pipe I made, #1 in a group of three, for a "small works" art show I participated in last December. Subsequently this was also the first pipe I sold. The idea came about as a result of the appreciation for the cool/dry smoking characteristics of my true calabash, and ...

Re: Long time listener, first time poster...

Thomas Tkach, Literaryworkshop, and d.huber, Thank you for the critique. Much appreciated. The rounded unstained briar cap is actually part of the stem, cut from the same block as the stummel. I agree that there is too much bend in the stem, have been considering straightening it out to almost strai...

A pipe for grandpa...

Hi. My name is RobE and this is my second post on this forum.  The following pipe I created for my wife's grandfather. He was an old Dutchman and he only owned "drugstore" pipes. I wanted to share the hobby with him, as a means to form a connection. I thought it appropriate to make him a n...

Re: Osage Dublin

I would look into the smoke-a-bility of Osage. It is a gorgeous wood, and the pipe looks nice, but I would be concerned with any toxicity it may have. My student and I are currently using it as decorative materials for stem inlays and shank extensions. Our bowls are almost always briar, with a few e...

Re: Finished this one Saturday

Regarding the top of the bowl; yes round, or exaggerated oval.
Shank to bowl trans, yes sharper.

Otherwise, nice work, please continue.

Re: Lundell poker, first hand made stem

I like the basket weave concept, the overall shaping is good also. Appears to be well balanced. I think the comment about the saddle relates to the radius cut of the reduction from round to flat. That being said, I actually like the cut the way it is. Is that an ebonite or acrylic stem? What did you...

Re: Long time listener, first time poster...

BobR - Thank you for the comments. I chose the lighter top to compliment the natural color briar end cap on the stem. As for the body color... There is about 4 layers of underlying stain and 2 different stain apps to achieve the top color. As for the finish, I am currently using tripoli, white diamo...

Long time listener, first time poster...

I am new to this forum, and I am honored to be here. I started making pipes back in 2003, and the first several were from pre-fabbed kits. Last fall I took a leap and started working from scratch. This horn represents the first "standard" pipe (standard referencing a one piece stummel and ...
