George, how bold of you to post the same information twice.

Re: Delrin tenon failure avoidance

The same way they attach bamboo? No, I'm thinking drill from outside the stem and into the delrin a couple places, then glue in a tiny rod of ebonite or whatever. I guess more like a keyed motor shaft than like a clevis pin. The reason I'm thinking along these lines is that it's pretty easy to cut ...

Re: Delrin tenon failure avoidance

I wonder if anybody's ever used Dunhill-style "through dots" as clevis pins to mechanically secure a tenon.

Re: Defects in the briar.

.....but of course the better stuff is twice as expensive...... Yup, but if you buy two mediocre blocks and throw one away, you're left with one crappy block for the price of one good one. Of course it's not a problem if you just want something to learn and practice with. When you get to the point ...

Re: Need A Wood That Is Similar To Briar

Buy a couple practice blocks from Vermont Freehand. If all you're doing is testing finishing techniques, you could probably cut each block into 1/4" thick slabs and get more bang for your buck.

I know Savinelli's "liquirizia" line has ANISE flavoring added. Maybe somebody was inspired to do their own version but made a typo on the order form when purchasing the flavoring agent?

Re: Greetings from SoCal!!

Howdy, and welcome! Here's a thought, though probably a bit beyond your skillset at this point: Make the poker out of two or three pieces. The soda can could be made of a top and bottom piece that are hollowed out like a true calabash and threaded to join together. The shank could be integral to the...

Re: Dublin bamboo stem

https://i.postimg.cc/CLMWxCx7/sketch1547004189417.png Quick & dirty edit. I'd go for more of a stout cone as opposed to the gramophone/morning glory shape of the stummel, and remove some meat from the bottom to try and get the lines back under control. Also thinning the stem and toning down som...

What's good for the stummel is good for the stem.

Re: 80 gram super-premium pipe, .250" non-reinforced tenon..

Perhaps the reasoning could be that minuscule tenons allow more real estate for those polished shank faces?

Nah, it just took a long time to make because they cast the actors ten years ago and it took them that long to learn how to actually make pipes!

Re: volcano with horn 9/30/18

I have found George's words to be true. Think of it this way: You're trying to shape a curve that is 80% perfect except for a lump at some point. The natural tendency is file or sand along the entire length of the curve, knocking down the high spot along the way. Problem is, as you file along that c...

Re: A request from me to you PMF'ers

I'd love to see one of your projects where instead of recreating the original stem (flaws and all) you replace it entirely with an "ideal" stem and explain the design decisions that lead you to differ from the original.

Wow George, awesome job! Not because you did a good job, that's kinda boringly obvious by now, but because you refrained from basically remaking the whole pipe from scratch to fix it's inherent problems ;) I use horn quite often but it never plays any structural role, it's supposed to be just a dec...

Re: Replacement stem making A to Z (instructional video set

Last I heard, George was charging by the hour. Last I saw, his signature claims that no customer ever says "I wish you had made this stem an hour faster." Thus, we can assume that George has reached a level of proficiency such that his customers do not end up paying for inefficiently used ...

Re: Dust collection Help

I use a shop vac with a cyclone type catcher in the line and a bag in the vac which catches particles that are missed in the cyclone. I have found that plastic cat litter cans make pretty fair collectors at the sanding wheels, and the necks accept the standard 2 1/2” hose connectors. I apologize, m...

Re: My 1" x 30" Belt Sander is Giving Me Grief

If it is the switch, get a 20 amp light switch and wire it in the place of the original. On wood lathes the switch is usually the first thing to go bad, on my sander, it was also the switch that died first. You would think some "smart" tool designer would realize that, but so far it is ei...
