Re: Rough edges on counter sink

I suppose that if a countersink bit is new it doesn't necessarily mean it's sharp. I 'll check that, but the edges do seem sharp.

Rough edges on counter sink

A newbie here seeking advice on using the counter sink tool I just recently bought from Pimo. When I drill the counter sink bevel the edges are rough and a little uneven. My rpms on my drill press are set for the lowest, which 585 rpm. I wondered if I should set the press for a higher rpm? I did thi...

Re: How thick should the bottom of the bowl be?

Nice first pipe! I too, am a beginner, with the same thoughts and question. The Pimo book states the bottom of the bowl should have 1/4" to 3/8" preferably.

I usually wear one of those leather mule gloves on the hand that is holding the briar, while I'm operating the rotary tool with the other hand. Some of those bits could make a nasty gouge in one's flesh. Just a mere flesh wound, I say.

Re: Greetings

Thanks Nick and James, practice makes perfect, indeed. When I was working on my first pipe I got dangerously close to the shank, with a little scratch or two. luckily, it all came out in the sanding. The shank on my first pipe kit was already turned and shaped, any slips and marks would've been hard...

Re: Greetings

Thanks for the information Sasquatch, I'm sure the usefulness of the various tools will become more apparent to me as I progress in this craft. I did a second round of buffing and polishing on my first pipe, it seemed to help some. Nate, you have some cool looking pipes!

Greetings

Greetings to all, I'm new here. I just recently got into pipe making, ordering my supplies from PIMO. I finished my first pipe, although not perfect I'm somewhat proud of what I've made, considering I haven't done any craft woodworking in 37 years. I'm not a woodworker, but I'm learning. I was a bit...
