New Pipe Maker's Starter Kit

Hello all, I have moved on to other hobbies and was clearing out some of my pipe making stuff. I'm not sure there will be any interest on a more advanced forum like this but I figured what I have might be a deal for someone just getting into pipe making. Does anyone still make Tyrolean pipes?

Hello all, So as I'm progressing in my pipe making journey I have become increasingly interested in what are commonly known as 'Tyrolean' style pipes. I love the hunting motifs, the wind-caps, the shanks made of antler or bone, etc. I have collected a few of them over the years, and while they can m...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

Yeah, I don't know why I thought making something round would be the hardest part. With a good file and some repetitive hand motion you can do that with your eyes closed. But drilling the tobacco chamber centered, and lining that up with the draft hole, and getting the mortise drilled and faced at t...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

Alright, so I finished my first pipe. I'm not really looking for critiques, it's a first pipe, I know it sucks. I'm not even sure what shape/style this was supposed to be, the shank is at a slight angle, the stem/shank junction needs work, etc. It could be worse though, and I'm sure it will be a dec...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

Well, I started making my first pipe. So far so good, I’ve already made a few big mistakes but I’m also having a blast doing it. Right now I’m at work just counting down the hours until I can go home and mess with it some more. I would say that at the moment the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to slo...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

I've got a drill press, I've got a set of decent rasps and files, I've got most of the various pipe specific tools which PIMO makes, mortise tool, tenon turning tool, etc. If I want to trim any excess material I'll have to do it by hand with a coping saw, but that doesn't bother me. The only thing s...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

Nice tools make things faster and easier. That has been said on this board many times by many folks. It's true. Honestly, my first thought when I read the O.P. (and really, no offense, please!) was "Just fucking do it. There's no secret. Sand it till it's round." . None taken…that was my ...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

Thanks again for the responses, I really appreciate it. While I'm new to pipe making, I'm not really new woodworking and tinkering. I've made plenty of knife handles and other more or less round objects with a sanding disc, so I'm feeling better about going this route. I realize it isn't terribly ef...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

Thanks for the advice gents. That's a fine looking pipe LatakiaLover, definitely makes me feel better about going the drill press route. Like you said, there is a steep learning curve to the lathe, and given my financial situation it seemed wiser to 'go with what you know'.
