Does the rule regarding shaping the shank with the stem attached apply to using prefab Lucite stems as well? Or should I be worried about scratching the Lucite that way? What is the best way to achieve a flush fit without messing up the Lucite stem?

The only thing I can say about the pipe is that I like the way it looks.

Thanks for the input Sasquatch. I think I'll keep my eyes open for a drill press on craigslist. I hadn't thought about how difficult it might be to fit my stems and shanks together by hand (especially as a beginner). Could explain part of the reason why I have had trouble thus far.
