I also have to back out officially because my business is circling the drain. No time for fun right now.

The chamber on that looks like it was drilled at a 90 degree angle not canted a little for easement. Is this true of all princes?

Here's a wonderful example of a prince for those concerned. Possibly my favorite to date. Re: My First pipe

I would try crafting a pipe out of briar for your next attempt. And when your finished show the recommended angles of the pipe for a proper critique. I do appreciate "objet trouvé". http://www.artinlimbo.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/fountain.jpg See for future reference: http://www.pipem...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe

I'm leaning towards the PM1236 but am a little worried about making such a large purchase before I have the chops . this I agree with wiseman. I'm letting the market vote for my existence as a pipe maker - the market should also dictate the type of machines you use if any machines at all. Slow and ...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

My first take- WTF?! Seriously though, that's a really silly thing to say. Especially if you've met some of the top-tier artisans and spoken with them at any length about their craft. When people smash with fists- they don't get high precision- they get bar fights. Mass production setups are great ...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

The line between handmade and machine-made pipes can get a bit fuzzy sometimes. I think this machine leans toward the "machine-made" side of that line... That topic is a big one and it goes way back in time! I'm sure early hominids were debating the effectiveness of smashing things with t...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

I've used a router to round the bottom of the bowl with a 1" dia round over. router should be mounted horizontal and you need the bowl fit on a shaft that will pivot the stummel into the cutter to a stop then turn 180. makes quick work of excess material. takes some setup and test runs. I woul...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

I just thought of another way: a router table It would be scary to use, but would work pretty well as long as you had a bit for each pipe you wanted to make. What?! DO NOT ATTEMPT until you have designed a router-table sled that securely holds that chunk of briar in place while keeping your hands v...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe

As for now, I do not own a metal lathe. I have a drill press, a table saw, sanding wheel, and a bunch of files. I do most of my stummel shaping with a table saw. I'm a little apprehensive about sharing the redneck-fung-shoei process but here it is for what its worth, you may find this helpful - you ...
