Metal Lathe and the etch-a-sketch method

In doing my research I came across a thread where it was discussed that stummel shaping on a metal lathe was done with a fixed rest and a wood turning tool and that few were using the hand wheels to shape. One of the first videos I ever came across was Chris using his Myford to shape out a stummel. ...

Re: Pulley RPM calculator

Here the old girl is. I am thinking I may pick up an arbor from Kurt and add a buffing wheel directly to the motor.

Re: Learning from the masters

Thanks guys. You all have been a big help. I have updated my profile to show Milwaukee, WI! All I need are 2 things to get this party started. Materials and a 4 jaw chuck. You've already got a lathe? That's great! You're way ahead of where most of us began. I started with a couple blocks of briar a...

Re: Learning from the masters

Wow guys, great insight and advice. Maybe I don't even have to leave my chair. All of the good advice is right in front of me. Judging by the looks of your guy's pipes if you told me they were made by Lars, Sixten or Bo I would probably believe you. Can't wait to get your input on a piece of my own ...

Re: Pulley RPM calculator

I do believe that is the right formula. I did not know it though until finding the calc.

Really though, my mission in the post was to brag about my sanding station that i got for 40 bucks! It would seem these belt driven grinders make for a nice versatile setup.

Pulley RPM calculator

For those that don't have a ridiculously high IQ like myself, here is a little calculator to determine the RPMs of a motor driven pulley system. In my case I purchased a pulley driven variable speed bench grinder that uses pulleys to vary the speed. I knew the rpm's of the motor and the diameter of ...

Re: Learning from the masters

I am surprised there are that many aspiring pipe makers. Heck, I only know a handful of people that smoke a pipe let alone want to carve them. I activate about 10 people a week that are joining this forum. Lots of interest. Wow, that is awesome. I always wondered whether the art is dying and other ...

Re: Learning from the masters

Right on. I think that is great advice. I was sort of thinking out loud on this. That and listening to the oomPaul podcasts, all of the pros always talk about learning from the masters before them. Then I hit on a podcast where a couple of carvers were in my area. Those guys are lucky to learn from ...

Learning from the masters

Hi everyone. I have yet to carve my first pipe but I am amazed at how much help is offered by pipe makers. Let's say you wanted to learn from one of the masters that lived fairly close to you. How would you go about this? Would you just contact the maestro and ask if they were willing to teach you a...

Briar grading

Can anyone point me to a resource on briar grading? I am looking to buy my first blocks for carving and I am seeing R's, M's, Extra Extra, Plateau...Trying to figure out what it all means. I am assuming for the first blocks you guys used were just using ebauchons? Is there a standard grading system?...
