I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. I have plenty of pipes that have angled shanks made by well known makers that aren't curved, Bulldogs included.

Re: A Doggie Turd for your Critique

Not a bad pipe. The top line of the shank turns upwards a little abruptly. There is a definite break in the top and bottom of the stem in the transition from diamond to flat. Finally, it looks like you drilled a straight bulldog stummel and then bent the stem. If you're gonna bend the stem, repeat ...

It's just a joke, but, not too far off from the truth because of it's faults.
When I'm able to make a pipe without flaws, then I'll quit calling them turds

A Doggie Turd for your Critique

This was a challenge for me to make getting the dadburn diamond shank right and straight yet tapered. It didn't come out exactly the way I wanted it but, we'll make another to see if I get closer. The button isn't usually a big problem for me but, this time I cut the slot cockeyed and tried to strai...

Re: additional drilling on plateaux kit?

I have basic tools at home but my work place has a shop with a drill press, disc and belt sanders, a metal lathe, etc.... so I'm thinking I'll try my hand at this on the next go around. I've done one kit and have one more to work with. I've gotten the impression that Ebauchon blocks are lower quali...

Re: additional drilling on plateaux kit?

neither PIMO nor Vermontfreehand appear to differentiate their kits. Perhaps its time I just drill my own... Vermont states choice of plateaux or ebauchon in his kits, Plateaux means it's basically a free hand kit with the rough outer skin (for the lack of a better word)on it. Ebauchon is a fully c...

I too was only joking when I posted the photo of the pipe in question. Although it was made by a top pipe maker in my opinion esthetically it's Ghastly and reminds me of a toilet paper tube pipe.

If you want to try some durable finish techniques, experiment with various hardening oils. They take quite a while to dry, and you need several coats, but they can be far more durable than even shellac.
Are we talking about Linseed oil and such?

Re: Buffer / Grinder Advice

Haha Im bout to the point where im just gonna order a grizzly belt disc sander combo than waste time looking for a disc that will fit on a 3/4 arbor that is flexible. Sometimes no matter how we try to save a little it ends up costing us more to try and re-purpose something then to just go buy the d...

Re: Adjusting dead center on Metal Lathe

I just checked my dead center again, thinking maybe my chuck jaws were off a hair. (Tried do it the lazy man's way in the beginning) Well, I reckon they were cause it centered perfectly to the head stock spindle and the Morse tapper in the tail stock. So while it was off a 32nd horizontally it wasn'...

Re: Adjusting dead center on Metal Lathe

Strange, cause it hasn't seem to give me a problem drilling an oversize hole at all and I use Delrin. The only thing I've noticed is the when I turn a shank on a stummel and then turn a stem they never seem to match. In other words one is off set from the other. This I thought was due to the center...

Re: Buffer / Grinder Advice

I think it has two speeds. What attachment would you recommend i get for it? Considering the length of the shafts on it I don't think a Beal system will work well being the length of there arbor. I use whether it be unconventional or approved by many here a standard disk. You can pick them up to fi...
