I was there. . . sort of. . . It took me 5 hours to make the drive over from KC (snowpacked roads all the way to Columbia). By the time I got there I had the worst stomach ache I've had since was a kid. I walked about half the show (met Bruce Weaver) before I had to go back outside to the truck. I t...

I too like Rad's example as the closest thing to a technically perfect, non- stylized billiard. And Ryans pipe could end up very near it if he decides to take that path. I'm going to shelf my current pipes and work on a billiard(s) over the next few days. We seem to be getting a lot of good input on...

OK - I frequent this place to learn about making pipes, so. . . Jeff - A question about your blasting technique. I see you masked the stem & the small ring around the end of the shank as well as the circle/oval for your mark that are to remain smooth. Is there a purpose for staining those areas ...

Re: Magnifier safety glasses

. . . Just a helpful tip for those that may be approaching The Age Of Eye Decline. I my case that age would be 46 years. When I first started using glasses a year ago it was basically just to read the scrolling info line on the bottom of the ESPN screen. Now I can't do any layout or set-up work wit...

Dude, I saw you there, but when I tapped you on the shoulder and said "Hey Ben", you looked at me like I was some kind of kook. Maybe you were the other guy smoking a pipe and looking at pipes.

Sorry for the long reply but. . . I use a 6.5HP, 16 gallon Rigid vac in my little garage shop. I have to clean the filter every 2 weeks. It works great, but - as everyone will tell you - it's not designed for dust collection so someday I'll get a real, bag-type dust collection system designed for wo...

I bought ZZ Minus sets in increments of .001". What is the difference between the Minus and Plus type? Gage Pins (or Pin Gages) are available in five classes - XX, X, Y, Z, ZZ. XX's are manufactured to the tightest tolerance and are thus the most expensive. ZZ's have the loosest tolerances (+/...

FWIW This hack thinks the bend looks right. Although I like the look of "underbent" or moderatly bent pipes, I like the feel of overbent pipes. Especially if it's on the heavy side, an overbent pipe seems to hang more comfortably from ones mouth.

I'm not real happy with this one, but I made an early decision to post my first ten pipes. I think my sense of style is developing faster than my skills to produce because two months ago I would have been pleased as punch with this one. Whadaya think? http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pip...

Re: Super long Taper bits

Hello all; I have been asked to make a churchwarden pipe for my brother inlaw. What I need to find is a 12 iinch tapered bit for the stem. Anyone know where I can get one? Gee, that seems like a perfectly appropriate question to post in the Tooling section of a Pipe Making Forum. Unfortunately Paul...

The Good Book says "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another". While I would rather sharpen my sword with a stone than iron, the larger point is appropriate here - we can’t improve or "sharpen" ourselves without guidance from others. Sometimes the guidance will be harsh...
