Pipe #1

Ok, so after much time lurking on this forum, I have finally made a pipe. Without further ado, I give you my #1. It's 7 3/4" Long by 1 3/4" wide. The tobacco chamber is 3/4" by 1 1/2" deep. I used a Pre-formed stem with a 1/4" Delrin tenon. A friend was nice enough to let me...

How to pack flake?

In a great show of noobness, I just tried to smoke my first batch of flake (McClelland 221b Honeydew) and I can't get it to stay lit. I've been smoking the regular stuff for 7 years and have pretty well determined my preferred packing method (hand-packed, lit, then tamped while lit). But the granula...

Amazing! I really like that finish! That looks like the kind of pipe you smoke with a Tux on.

Re: seeds?

I don't have any, but http://www.seedman.com has them for really cheap (~$2 a packet of 50), that's where I get mine. They have lots of varieties, including a bunch for cigarettes and cigars.

Re: alterior bowl coating?

last time I got a new pipe, I just rubbed some honey around the inside of the bowl for the first smoke, then packed and burned it as usual, the smoke was a little more acrid, but it seems to have worked (it took a couple packs to burn all the honey off though, especially the stuff at the bottom, tha...

Re: First picture post on here.

Is that a motorcycle helmet? Interesting shape... I feel like it needs more color... Maybe a contrast finish or stem inlay? Definitely a unique pipe though!

Re: Not sure how I feel about this...

I have to say, it is a fairly neat design, but the materials are really cheap looking, if you had the same design with a Briar core, and then a jacket made with another hardwood (Purpleheart, Ebony or Zebrawood come to mind, maybe even Maple if you wan a very clean looking lighter wood) with a vulca...

Better Photos... Better Critiques

I found this today:

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To- ... Up-Photos/

After having seen many "I'd love to critique your pipe, but the pictures are too blurry" comments, I thought it might be appropriate to share. :)

Pecan Wood?

Hey All, I think I've finally got the wherewithal to try my hand at actually making pipes, instead of just lurking here and commenting on others. I've seen it said often that you should start with a softer wood than Briar (Olive is mentioned regularly). I helped my dad cut down a Pecan Tree this wee...

Re: Question about Dunhill Night Cap

I've heard that putting a fresh Apple slice in the jar for a day or two works as well... plus you get to eat the rest of the apple. I've tried it and haven't run into any issues yet, though I usually use a cigar humidifier in mine.

Forum search utilities always seem problem-ridden to me...
Maybe we should try something like this: http://www.phpbb.com/mods/db/index.php? ... rib_id=681?

Thanks all, I have used the lead-free antimony stuff before, so I may look into that more. Right now, it's just an idea I'm playing with, but I'll think it out more and see what happens.

Pewter in Pipes?

Has anyone ever heard of or used pewter or other stove top casting metals in their pipes (either as inlays, or metal bases, etc?) is there any problem with the pewter softening with heat or giving off poisonous lead fumes while smoking? I'd be curious to try it on something, but I don't want to go b...

Or better yet, (as I mentioned in reply to Daniels pipes) A miniature steam boiler integrated with the bowl, attatched to a fully functional piston assemble and steam whistle... Also makes Julian Fries!!!

I propose a contest!

Daniel, I like the fact that the pipe is different, and the mangled stem is pretty cool, (very grungy looking). But if you really want to go steampunk, Maybe you could experiment with some brass inserts. Maybe even some studs or rivets incorporated in the bowl, that could look pretty neat (or attach...
