At the show's fine. I'll look forward to meeting you! (the table is reserved as "Bill Walther"...). Best.

"If deeper stain penetration is what you are after, just apply two layers of stain and possibly a retarder on top of the second layer"

.

Andrew - what kind of retarder do you use?

Re: heat treating reshaped spade bits?

Since you've already annealed it, you might try heating it cherry red and thrusting it into a can of water. If that doesn't work, a can of oil might. Some steels are water-hardening; some are oil-hardening (and some are probably beyond the home-shop operator).

Massis, I think your rustication is really effective, and I like your choice of stain for the "bark". What did you use to get that effect?

Re: lathe question

Maybe a dumb question...but after "pushing the tailstock over with one screw, did you then tighten the other? In other words, both screws need to be tight when you're done.

I like the blast and the color - almost a ringer for a Castello Old Antiquary I have had for 20-30 years.

Re: J Alan Design Tools

I'm a little surprised at the straight sides on the cutters. I usually taper my chambers from about 7/8" down to about 5/8" at the start of the bottom curve. I've seen a lot of commercial pipes with a taper down to maybe 1/2" or less, but I never liked the experience of smoking that l...

Interesting question - will lead to freeze-drying, and other questions. Bet this will be a big post.

Re: Lathe for Sale

Will do, Bob. Thanks for the nice comments. There are a lot of oldies on Ebay, but shipping is a pain, of course. I just bought another - a 10" Wabeco D6000E off Ebay. The transaction went pretty smoothly, but it's never easy. You have to try to ask all the questions up front to avoid misunders...

Re: Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option

Thanks for sharing that research, Bob. It seems that information on this subject would be plentiful on the web, but it's surprisingly hard to find and distill in a way that's comprehensible and usable to a non-engineer. I've gotten off on rabbit trails before, like dc motors and controllers that run...

I trust you know there's a backgear on the lathe? Slows it down a lot. Just be sure to stop the spindle completely, engage the backgear and make sure it's fully engaged to keep from breaking gear teeth.

9" South Bend Lathe for Sale

I've noticed quite a bit of interest in lathes of late, so thought I'd throw this in the ring for consideration. I have a great old 9" South Bend Workshop lathe for sale on Ebay (eBay item number:231145233745). It is listed as "Lathe - South Bend 9" ". It's in excellent condition...

Lathe for Sale

I have a great old South Bend 9" lathe offered for sale on Craigslist here locally (Arlington, Texas). If anyone is in need, please check out that ad. You would need to go to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex pages and enter "Lathe South Bend" in the search box. I completely disassembled...

Re: stamps

I made myself a jig for my drill press. For the support, I used a narrow block of wood with a V cut in the top - it's mounted to a flat board long enough to clamp to the press table. For the chuck end, I epoxied a 1/2" piece of rod (could be any reasonable diameter - that's just what I had hand...

Hi, Ryan. I'm your neighbor over here in Arlington. Sooner or later, I'm going to have to take the plunge and get some blasting equipment, so I'll be interested to hear what you think of this piece when you get it in action.

Re: Reject; I'd love some input on shaping

I've discovered there is no reason to emulate Dunhill shapes. You can make any pipe smoke like a Dunhill. Case in point, I have an old Willmer Extra Grain A that smoked like, well.... The stem broke, so I felt around in my junk drawer until I found a stem that more or less fit. Turned out, it had a ...
