Re: hello , help about metal lathe

a lathe is used for making the circular or spherical shapes, such as the bowl, tobacco chamber, shank, tenon, mortise, etc. if your trying to carve shapes into the pipe you could use a chisel and mallet, a dremel with a carving bit or rasp or just about visit the "tools" section, its got t...

questions about air holes

is it better to have a large bore air hole? would this help in anyway? also seems to me that roughing up the air hole with a dremel bit might improve function of cooling / moisture absorption by increasing surface area regardless of diameter. what do you think?

did it ever occur to anyone that it might be the same person every few years?

Re: Who locked the Magic Billy thread??!!

its kinda sad that the bigger waves around here are not made by the artist, but by some kid with a lot of free time and an extensive knowledge of tools. did i mention i will be cutting the air hole and mortise with a diamond tipped liquid cooled deep hole drill?

Re: Age of Briar.

Magic, I've followed everything you've posted here, and a large percentage of it is, while I believe well-intentioned, either utterly misguided or utter fucking bullshit. The point of this forum is that it's NOT a dick or even a pipe-waving contest. The point is, people who don't know too much abou...

Re: Age of Briar.

You don't have to have insurance to operate a business either (there is no federal law stating this)....if you employ people you have to have work comp (state and local laws differ). Is it a good business practice?? YES, but mandated by law...no. "In fact, your business may be legally required...

Re: Age of Briar.

Dude...you sound a bit sketchy to me (not trying to ruffle feathers here, just the way that story came across). A lot of that information is inacurate and unnecessary (especially for pipe makers). My Grandfather was in the automotive business for well over 30 years. He did custom builds and body wo...

Re: Age of Briar.

"pay or taxes" yes its a typo and i'm glad to see everyone is paying enough attention to proof read my work. "To quote a very famous pipe maker: Never, ever take a deposit up front for a custom pipe. If you do, they own you and can harass you until you get the pipe made, and when you ...

Re: Age of Briar.

if something ( a briar pipe in this case ) will retail for $400 then the manufacture must have sold it to the retail shop for around half of that. so $200 is the price point your really looking at. if you operate an online retail store then you can ask $400, however the nature of this beast is that ...

Re: Age of Briar.

There is 2000 year old Briar, I have one was smoking it when our Lord came into Jerusalem. Thought I saw that tobacconist there too. He was'nt lying. I have a $30 french mass produced second and its my best smoker so it seems that pipes are similar to cigars in that way. i have smoked $30 ci...

Age of Briar.

let me start by saying i have NEVER smoked a briar pipe. i have only smoked a pipe one time and it was cherry wood. however i am looking to pick up the art of making pipes as a hobby. after lurking around here for while i decided i needed some hands on experience with briar pipes. so i went to my lo...

Re: allow me to introduce myself

I'm not concerned with the dye because basically all the toxicity data and the conclusions of the study presented show that the stuff is not very toxic. I went and read it all, fully expecting that I was going to find out that the dye is mutagenic and causes brain damage. This is not the case. Used...

Re: allow me to introduce myself

the only rule here is that you must be able to smoke out of it. other than that, everything is fair game. i could make a paper weight that looked like a pipe, but then it wouldn't be a pipe. :banghead: Here we go again... Will you at least concede that there might be some aspects of pipemaking that...
