Re: disc sander backing plate

So, out of curiosity, (and because the 8 inch is too slow for my liking) what does everyone else use, motor and disc-wise, if I might ask?

thanks

Re: disc sander backing plate

Thanks guys, I actually have a couple of 5 inch discs that I use on my lathe and, though they do work well and I like the quick change hook and loop discs (by the way Norton 3x discs are great), I'm looking for 8 inch. Actually, I found them here: http://www.acetoolrepair.com/index.php They have par...

Re: visiting a pipemakers shop...how to approach?

Pipe making is not as hard to correct bad habits, as there is no muscle memory involved. Not to get on the wrong side of the Law or anything but, like anything you do with your hands (or possibly other body parts), its (almost) all about muscle memory. Eyeball muscles included. Just an observation....

disc sander backing plate

Howdy guys! I know I haven't posted in a while, but I've been Busy. I hope everyone is having fun. I just scored a 1/2 horse g.e. ac motor with a 5/8 shaft. Where the hell can I find a disc to put on it? (8 or 9 inch) I'm open to either sticky disks or screw on, but I can't find much online. I tried...

That's a pretty nice looking horn you've got, man. (I don't say that often) You know, to me it looks like you've got a little promblem I've had on a couple of pipes. Namely, the rim just doesn't know where it wants to be. In the first picture, it looks like you've got some room to work with, but it ...

At the risk of chiming in, I'm going to. As someone who Actually has been making products all my working life and has worked with a dipshit or two (and been one) I have to say this........ If, by the time I have done something 175 times, I have not decided on at least a few details in my work (measu...

Nice! Cool little Atlas. Clean the rust off that chuck and find yourself a live center and you're in business. One thing I notice, though, that dust bucket under the disc sander looks like a knee-buster.

Glad to see shop pictures. Thanks for sharing. Now git carving!

Well, for reasons way too boring to get into (involving the twirling beachball of death, for you Mac users) I can only get this drawing posted now. It does give an idea, I hope, of what I mean about the taper in profile. It's not a big deal, really, since I'm pretty open to changing ideas and perspe...

Thanks Guys, for the kind words. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I do have a couple of things I wanted to say about it that I thought might be helpful, but I need to scan a couple of drawings and such. I'm just having a little lunch break now (1 o'clock west cost time) but I'll get it done this e...

Well, I'm working on a cheesy little post about some design woes (actually changes I had to make during progress due to pits) I have with this pipe. That's not ready yet, but these pictures are. So here goes...... http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2620/122/5/1585260603/n1585260603_167626_...

Cedar, I like that. Actually, I might have mentioned, I always had a thing for whittlin'. My problem is I can't seem to whittle much but a pointed stick. Monty Python could'a put me to work, I guess. Also, since my kids have always been into helping me make stuff and helping me feel like The Man by ...

So, there I was....... Trying to study for an up and coming piece on pipe design, for which there was apparently, no true book ever written. I called my brother. He told me, (he being a master of design) to, put it down, Do something else. There I was, doing something else, being a smartass, and wri...

Not that I leave plateau on anything, but a dental pick works well after a wire wheel. I just like to zen out on the cleaning process sometimes.

I have found that toenails are a bad idea. Personally, trench rot tastes like shit to me, but then again, I'm from California.

Wow

You've got skills.

Is this your work? Yowza!
(Hope you don't mind me posting this.) You should put some of this up in the "Other things we make" section.

Did anyone else notice the link posted up there?

That is some nice work. I've been thinking about taking the plunge into knife making for a while, but I think I've got enough irons in the old fire for now. Well, I don't know if this will help at this point, but my father gets catalogs from Garrett Wade....they have a lot of interesting tools. Your post reminded me of something I saw in their catalog, so I looked it up online... check this out.... http://www.garrettwade.com/product.asp?pn=98N11.01 -chris
