Re: Hearing Protection

I have a pair of these and I love them: http://www.surefire.com/ep3-sonic-defenders.html They're completely passive (no electronics), but they're designed so that the louder the sound the more they muffle. I like them because I can hear things at a normal sound level, but when I turn on the power t...

Re: lathe question

I have been putting my tapered drill chuck into the head stock with thick center drill countersink then I put my live center into my tailstock and line up the points. I have tried a couple different pieces of acrylic rod 20mm. If things are centered this way, then either something is awry when thin...

Re: lathe question

How are you verifying that the tailstock is centered before you put your stem (rod?) in the chuck? And have you tried swapping out a piece of rod that you know is true (or a pin gauge if you have one), and chucking that up to see if it's off with the tailpiece. Michael

Re: Hearing Protection

Thanks for the leads!

Dave, can you actually listen to music at a safe decibel level and filter out the background noise at the same time with those buds? If so, that's pretty amazing technology.

Hearing Protection

My dust collector motor is unavoidably near where I sit when I'm working at the wheel. When I build a new shop I'll isolate it, but it's not possible now. I value my ears almost as much as my hands, so I'm thinking it would be worth investing in a good set of ear protectors. Any recommendations? I d...

Re: Blasting unit up and running!

Just sharing a bit of success. I spent the weekend planing my shop door so I could close it (thank you countless New England freeze/thaw cycles) and waiting for a no-show electrician to wire my compressor. Eventually, with the encouragement of a couple of friends, I undertook wiring it myself. It w...

Re: Compressor install question

Apologies if I'm hijacking the OP, but it seems relevant: My compressor is here and tomorrow is dedicated to getting it up and running. I have a pressure regulator and air/water filter to run in between the compressor and the blasting cabinet. Any considerations in setting these up? Do they need to ...

Yep. I'm hiring two mondo men movers. I also have a bulkhead so that will help.

Re: Compressor install question

Mine is arriving tomorrow. I'll be happy if I can get it from the curbside to the basement given that we've had snow on the ground since early December. Once there...I believe it will be sitting on the pallet, at least for now.

Re: J Alan Design Tools

If the "extension" is attached to the briar via a tenon that extends the majority of the way through the cap (i.e., to just short of the point at which the bit is inset), how is it more likely to come off, compared to a band with a flush mount non-mil stem? I'm not disputing - just not und...

Re: Compressors: Ingersoll Rand, Belaire, or ??

Very helpful info. Thank you. Premal, there are two different Bel Aire 80 gallon, two stage, 5HP compressors which differ in price by $300. Aircompressorsdirect wasn't told me there was something slightly different in terms of efficiency about the motor. Do you know which one you have? (the $1200 on...

Re: Compressors: Ingersoll Rand, Belaire, or ??

Are you saying they're all the same (Ingersoll, Belaire, the one you mentioned?). Or do you mean the ones that Lowes sells?

Compressors: Ingersoll Rand, Belaire, or ??

I'm taking the plunge, or should I say the blast? I've settled on an 80 gallon two stage one phase compressor. Research on this forum and elsewhere has suggested that these are two reliable brands in my price range. The IR is $2-300 more. Any opinions on which one I should get? Any other suggestions...

Oneway Talon chuck and jaws - suitable for midi lathes

I have a Oneway Talon chuck with a 1"x8tpi backplate, a set of spigot jaws, two tower jaws, and a chuck key. If you want to get going using a small wood lathe for stummel and stem work this is a great way to do it. The spigot jaws work well for rod stock and the tower jaws are suitable for stum...

Re: Two questions about an estate

it sounds like the entry into the tobacco chamber is similar to the entry into the chamber of my, and many if not most cavalier pipes, so I wouldn't worry about that. I wonder about just how flat bottomed it is, are the angles on the sides right angles? how big is the bowl? I would call the pipemak...

Re: Two questions about an estate

Ahem, Gentlepeople, we have a pragmatic question at hand here, so let's leave the :fencing: aside: should I return the pipe or not? Other opinions on whether the physical characteristics I described are cause for concern?

Re: Two questions about an estate

[quote="LatakiaLover"]Sounds like a pipe-shaped object made by one of those "visual artist/woodworker" guys who doesn't understand that pipes must work first, or nothing else matters. I've been seeing a fair amont of such stuff lately, since the Internet has made it clear how eas...
