Re: Which Sand paper is best?
I used klingspor for years. I order online because their shipping cost are real fair. Quick service and everything sanding you can think of. They also carry a lot of other stuff I use.

Re: Eliminating tiny light gaps
I like the video. Add a layer of sandpaper to the drill stop collar. You need a rod the size of the tenon., the drill stop collar and some sandpaper. This will work the same as the end mill I previously mentioned

Re: Eliminating tiny light gaps
I am not much of a pipemaker. But in my opinion I would use an end mill with a removable pilot bit that is the same as your tenon. It is a machinist tool bit used on a milling machine. Personally I would visit a machine shop. Explain the problem and get their 2 cents. They probably will sell you wha...

Re: Anyone tried block microcrystalline wax on a buff?
I did a lot of research and had access to 2 college chemistry professors that were also woodturners. I mixed carnauba wax, bees wax and the best microchrystaline wax the local university could afford. We tried various ratios starting with 1:1:1 and a few others. Out of the good paraffin I tried the ...

Re: Anyone tried block microcrystalline wax on a buff?
The microcrystalline wax helps to prevent fingerprints. I use a mixed version in decorative wood turnings.
Basically it is a combo of highly refined paraffin wax, carnauba wax and beeswax that was melted and mixed together. The highly refined paraffin wax is the microchrystallie part.

Re: applying sandpaper to Rudat Design french wheel
I thought the same, but a friend used one to power a woold lathe using a router speed controller. I did the same. I have, the HF are cheap ones that will accept a router speed controller. The angle grinder I have uses replaceable brushes. Not the same as my higher dollar Makita angle grinder. I also...

Re: applying sandpaper to Rudat Design french wheel
Odd man out. Go to harbor freight, find the 9 inch angle grinder then with a 9" backing pad for sanding discs using PSA Sanding disc's. Search on line for a speed controller for angle grinders. Put it altogether and create a mount for it. Buy discs from Klingspor woodworking. End result, CHEAP ...

Re: how to make a spoon bit from a paddle bit
Follow this video to make one. https://youtu.be/m57XbCB3fC4 I also pre drill the center of the hole with a 1/8" bit. This helps to guide the "spoon" bit. It also helps you know when you hit bottom. I also cut off about 1/4 of the shank of the paddle bit, that will reduce the chatter o...

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?
I have a $16 angle grinder from Harbor Freight. Speed controlled with a $18 router speed controller. Several grit sanding discs, with a homemade belt sander attachment. Less than a $100 for all of it. I would like a better sanding disc with a flexible backing but this is a hobby and even I cannot ju...

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?
A drill press is like a verticle version of a horizontal lathe.
I am in no way great pipemaker strictly a part timer. But I use an old drill press and disc sander and files and sandpaper to get good results.

Look on eBay for a ER32 collet block. It is like a chuck, and you can mount it in the 3 jaw chuck.

Re: Opinions on Linseed Oil.
You might consider looking at sun bleached linseed oil. https://youtu.be/GUyXm2IL4OQ You can also melt carnauba wax and add it to the sun bleached linseed oil. I use a mix of beeswax on my homemade wood tool handles, Mind you I am not a pipemaker, only in this for my woodworking hobby to learn the t...

Re: Can TruOil be used as a finish?
Tru-Oil is a combination of oil, thinner and polyurethane. I would experiment with some scrap to start with, first I would give the briar a coat of a mix 40% boiled linseed oil and 40% thinner and 20% poly, this will allow the oil and poly to soak in. Let that dry for 48 hours, then apply light coat...
