Re: Recommendations for belt sander.
I have one of these 1x42 belt sanders from Lee Valley. http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=44884& I also have another that is like it, but it came from Montgomery Wards in 1971. It is on it's 2nd motor and still kicking out sanding dust. They are as noisy as you can get, but built so s...

Beautiful pipe, and a great choice on the movie.

You put a lot of work in that pipe, it looks great.

I agree the Feibings alcohol based leather dye is your best bet. It comes in all colors of the rainbow, and it was probably the dye used in that green pipe I saw.

Re: Best way to get as vibrant colors as possible?
I have no answer, but in the past I saw a green pipe, that the color was as vibrant as any I have seen. In my mind, I also believe there was an orange one. Unfortunately I only think I remember they were in the Gallery section of the forum. I did a search for both, and came up empty handed. You migh...

If you are looking at the Chinese cheapies, I suggest reading the comments of this thread from the International Association of Penturners.

There are 30 pages of comments of the "good, the bad and the ugly".

Your home brewed rust and vinegar will work faster if you first take the steel wool and soak it in acetone to remove the manufactures oils that are on the steel wool.

Thank you, it was not what I expected, it was a lot more refined process than I had thought it would be.

Re: Nice tool-oriented stummel drilling, cutting & shaping v
I saw one commercial pipe making operation in the early 1970s (in New York, possibly Brooklyn). They drilled the tobacco chamber first and used that to attach the block to the frazing carver , cut the rough shape, then the mortise. Then some guy drilled the airway freehand just like Rainier Barbi i...

This set up here viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11115 Is just another version of the chuck/vise that is in the quoted article.
A drill press is a vertical lathe without a tool rest, and a lathe is a horizontal drill press with a tool rest.

Re: Chuck Question
As George will attest you need a really good drill press to do a good work on drilling pipes, most have too much slop in the spindle and too little travel. True, but sometimes the sloppy drill press is because of operator ignorance. A tune up of the drill press might help. http://www.rvplane.com/pd...

Re: Chuck Question
Instead of making a chuck, convert the same thing to a vise for the drill press. Then use the drill press as a mill to bore out the stummel and drill the airway. Mounted in a 2 way cross slide vise and you have a basic milling machine setup. That way you don't have to wonder when the blank will brea...

Re: Help me build a new shop.
I have an 8x12 portable building. I added a U shape benches that covers the 8 foot wall and 8 foot on each side of the 12 foot walls. I am disabled, cannot walk without a walker or something to hang on to. So all of my equipment is set up so that I can sit on or lean against bar stools. If you go th...

Re: 2 jaw chuck problem question
As a woodturner for 50 plus years I can say that wood lathes are not and never have been precision lathes like their counterpart metal lathes. It hasn't been that long ago that the manufacturers started making chucks for wood lathes. The first chucks for wood lathes were metal lathe chucks, they wer...

ED at Exotic Blanks might be able to cast you one to a basic shape. But it will be up to you to drill out the airway and shape the outside.

Re: Anybody got a lead on stem material that looks like bras
The Alumilite blanks are cast epoxy resin, they don't bend with heat like the normal stem stuff does. I would guess the best way would be to cast it with the hole in place. You will need a 2 part mold, with in insert for the airway. I believe there are some tutorials on the Alumilite website, but fr...

Re: A lathe question...
Do you have a drill press? If you do it would be a it better to make a mount for your chuck and line it up with the chuck in the drill press.
What seems to be the issue with the lathe?
