Computers

A few years ago I was totally into computers, I spent about 10 years locked in my basement learning...not everything I could, but everything I wanted to about computers. Towards the end of this I was getting more interested in woodworking so naturally I combined the two. This desk houses 2 computers...

There are 20 seperate pieces. Each arm has 4 different parts and every part except the hat has small tenons then fitted into holes in the body so they can't get knocked off too easily.

Sorry JBW, thats another reason I had to do it, because my daughter saw one and really wanted one for Christmas.

O.T. Somewhat

My local woodturning club has challenges for every meeting. The challenge this time was snow people, so naturally I couldn't resist putting a pipe on mine. I am pretty happy with how the whole thing turned out let me know what you think. The whole snowman is 13" x 5" not counting the arms....

*Catch gets out calipers checks shank, checks fairy-fart, checks shank, checks fairy-fart..........* actually I think its just a hair more than a fairy-fart  I'm just happy I got it round, still working on the perfectionist thing. :D I am still struggling with some things but I learn something ...

First pipe posted

Ok this is not my first pipe, but it is the first one I feel like posting. I would have to guess (because I haven't kept count) that its about #11. I am not a picture taker but please feel free to give comments good or bad. I can take it. http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9011/1001231yo9.jpg http:/...

Slightly cupped runs the risk of having gaps if you don't sand evenly around the shank and stem. If you make an oval shanked pipe, you'll see the stem touching on the outside edges of the oval with a light gap in the middle. I have experience with this. Perfectly flat is what you want. Rad I...

Ok now I need to know. I can understand why its a bad thing for either the stem or shank to be bulged, as this would create a gap between the two, but does it really matter if they are slightly cupped? I would think this would make it a bit easier to make sure you get a nice fit.

Now that makes sense! Everything I had read (to this point) talked about the airway being centered in the chamber and I had always taken this to mean centered in the bottom, and I couldn't figure out how to achieve this easily. But it does probably explain why the pipes I have made to this point hav...

I think these are all good suggestions and I did end up drilling the mortise first but only because I was impatient and didn't wait for a reply :? My next question was going to be whether it was ok to tap into the daught hole as has been suggested so that it is in the center of the chamber. Wasn't s...

Stem drilling

I am going to attempt an Oom Paul style pipe. Probably just a pipe dream (I know that was bad) but I gotta try. My question at this point is which should I drill first the mortise or the draught hole? (hopefully my terminology is correct) My thought is to drill the mortise first so there would be le...

Thank you for your replies. I will trim the long threads and give the wheel time to break in. I will ease up on the wax too. The wheels were a set that came on a long mandrel that I could use on my lathe so perhaps they are not of the highest quality and I will replace them as they wear out or I get...

I am new to the forum, although I have lurked for a couple weeks. I am also new to the world of pipe making. I don't have any that I feel good enough to post in the gallery yet, and I am impressed by those that are posting their first or second pipes and they look great! In my quest for a pipe to po...
