Re: Some Latest Works
I think trying to call it anything other than acrylic would create confusion, and might even be seen as deception. Oh I wasn't seriously insinuating misleading anybody with a name or label. Your pipes are magnifecent. I was merely complimenting the craftsmanship and that the appearance of ivory was...

Re: Some Latest Works
Hey Walt, I was told by jpipes to check out this set and to see how "ivory" is done. I must say, sir, that is pure artistry. Instead of "faux ivory" or "imitation ivory" it should be called L-ivory (the 'L' denotes that it is ivory produced in the laboratory).

Re: How is ivory simulated, imitated, or faked?
Are you going to Chicago? Maybe we could meet. I wish. I do have a junk piece I was already intending on experimenting on first. The commission is for, get this: the grampa of my boss' wife, so talk about pressure. But I am really excited. Both because I'm doing it but also because its for an older...

Re: How is ivory simulated, imitated, or faked?
I can totally visualize the process and result. I'm imagining it looking like an old pre-carved whale's tooth...like what they used for scrimshaw. When you say hook blade or hook knife (I can't see the post as I am doing this from my phone) are you referring to the knives that have a J-type looking ...

Re: How is ivory simulated, imitated, or faked?
I seriously did not know substitutes were around. I have an off-white stem that has a lot of meat on it which is perfect for the carving part. It has the color, and even the small transitions of translucent and white streaks which I think make it look like ivory. In retrospect, I guess that would ma...

How is ivory simulated, imitated, or faked?
Hey guys I gots a good one: I've been commissioned. The only request was Art Nouveau. I want to create an ivory-looking mouthpiece/stem. The carving is the easy part. But I need some wisdom on how to make off-white acrylic look like real ivory from, say, 1909. Tips and tricks and ideas and suggestio...

Re: Pipes for the ladies: design ideas?
not my taste, but this is what I made for a lady once, she picked the shape and colors it was my 22nd pipe from years ago That is one sick instrument. Kinda inspires me to throw on some metalflake and pinstriping on my next piece...or maybe not. But that is magnificent. I love the combo of purple a...

Re: Pipes for the ladies: design ideas?
Really all the same things that make it appealing to you make it appealing to me. I really think the same thing applies to pipes. Just becuase a woman is smoking doesn't mean that you should go about making it any other way than you would for a man....unless you have a specific customer that is ask...

Pipes for the ladies: design ideas?
I have heard chatter in other arenas and at my college there is an increasing interest of pipesmoking among ladies just as cigars. I know there are a many historical female figures who have enjoyed the pipe. My question is what does a feminine pipe look like (and I don't mean pink or jewel encrusted...

Welcome! It won't always be this bad. I haven't cried in my shop in quite a while. Hey welcome aboard yo! While my shop tends to be a lounge chair with a trashcan between my knees to catch wood filings (or the bathroom with that trashcan between my knees prior to my shower [just keepin it real and ...

Re: River Reed for the stummel?
This is one photo I found on the web. I have some in my yard that differs only in size. But where I am in California this is plenty available. I'll dig it up and dry it out for a year or so if it works.

Re: #036 Freehand black bamboo dublin with boxwood ring..
I like it. The bamboo "fits" the stummel. I think the assymetric variations in the bamboo stem perfectly compliment the assymetricity of the stummel. My only question is the stummel bamboo also, or briar? The outside stain and the inside of the bowl are throwing me off.

River Reed for the stummel?
I know there has been some discussion regarding bamboo and its use in shank material. I've also read somewhere (and I don't remember exactly where) that bamboo has also been used for the stummel. In this case it is the rhizome that is used for carving the stummel. However does anybody know about the...

Re: What did yer 1st pipes look like?
Here's my first. Hard to believe it took me more than 80 hours to finish it. Aww, gee. I just realized that my first anniversary of making pipes will be on Feb. 7th. What a year it's been. :) My First Pipe Thread http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/16/32/14/94/big_fr10.jpg While a first pipe, that...

This was mine: http://lumpkins.smugmug.com/Events/740i-for-sale/i-V84bt4n/0/M/Finished-Pipe3-M.gif I was trying to copy a Ben Wade freehand I had. Crazy thing is I can actually see the Benwadian influence on that one. You guys are awesome. All artists began somewhere I guess and when a new guy like...

What did yer 1st pipes look like?
Hello. I'm new to the group and am positively hooked. The history of my present obsession was something that remotely resembled a pipe I carved from backyard peachwood. I have found that most of my questions have already been answered several times over by the Big Boys. However, one thing I would li...
