It seems to me that if you leave a small gap between your tennon and mortise floor, after that small gap fills up it will not be any different than if there was no gap and further smoking would still push the stem up. To be honest though, I don't think this would actually happen. Now I am not a seri...

I used a lot of these style of collet when I worked machining aluminum engine parts. They always did the job and I didn't have any problems. I don't know why they wouldn't work in a lathe, given the proper holder to mount in. It sounds like one of those instances where a gadget was invented for cert...

I don't know if this is something you would like to try or not but when I made my first pipe I had some similar problems. It would leave some tobacco unburned at the bottom of the bowl and the whole pipe full wouldn't burn very well. Granted I was very new to the whole pipe smoking thing, but I got ...

I would love to be in. It may take away time from me lurking in back allys scrounging for scrap metal, but I think it would be fun. :) For themes how about: Circles Sunday afternoon I can't believe the Cubs are out of the playoffs! AGIAN!!!!!! (some or all of the above may not be suitable for pipe t...

I don't know if this will be more cost effective for accessories or not but pierredekat listed several make your own lathe links in another posting somewhere and I am going to give it a go. I think it will be a worthy project in itself and I should come out with a machine that will be capable of mak...

I had forgotten about MSC. I will have to look them up. You guys just accentuate my point when you say you order as Pipecrafter and Howell Bamboo Fly Rods. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume those are not your given names? :) I suppose that you could always just make up a business and use...

I seem to remember when I first heard of McMaster Carr that they would only take business orders and not orders from individuals. Has that changed? Possibly the advent of internet shopping has opened them to new markets? I have always lamented the fact that I could not order from them since they hav...

I've been reading this forum for a year or so now and this is the first time I have looked in this section of the forum.:) Kind of been focused on making the pipe and not growing my own. The funny thing is that I have just been reading about this topic due to Kurt mentioning a blend he picked up at ...

I can say from experience that a dremel will do a fine job. The only problem is that it takes a looooonnnng time to finish that way. If you are going to use a dremel I suggest that you get the roughest sand paper cyliners that they make for the roughing or it will take even longer to complete. On th...

Ahhhh, much better! <hitting head with open hand> Thanks guys. I guess I was confused because I think of a countersink more like what the mortise looks like, as in a flat bottomed hole. I would call that a chamfer but that could just be the terminology I learned working in a small engine factory aft...

Ok, I may be the only one here who is a little unsure of what exactly you are counter sinking here. Being new to pipe making, I'm not always up on all the small details that go into the craft. If someone could give a short description of what is happening in this process and where exactly it takes p...

This may be a bit simplistic or even barbaric by some peoples standards, but I just open the pouch and dribble a little water in and then seal it back up. Shake it up a bit and then let it sit. Open it after a few hours and see what you have. If it is still too dry, do it again. If it is too wet, op...
